Why We Call It Holliday Haus
Long before it became Holliday Haus, this historic Leadville property had a story of its own.
In 1882, Doc Holliday came to Colorado after things got ugly in Arizona. A gambler, dentist, and tuberculosis patient, he hoped Leadville's dry mountain air might do him some good.
Leadville was booming with silver money, which meant there were plenty of card games and plenty of reasons for a gambler like Doc to stick around.
The story goes that Doc discovered the second-story outhouse and called it “a wonderful piece of technology in such a cold place.”
Part history. Part legend. All Leadville. Can we prove Doc was here? No. That's the fun part. What we do know is that the original outhouse seats survived and today, they've been turned into a bench in our game room.
